Design and Build Under One Team

Most renovation headaches happen in the gap between design and construction when what looks good on paper doesn't account for what's possible on site. Budgets blow out. Timelines slip. Decisions get made without you.

At Built By Wood, that gap doesn't exist. As a design and build team, we work together from your very first meeting, ensuring that every design decision is grounded in what's actually achievable within your space and your budget. What gets drawn is what gets built.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bathroom renovation cost?

The final cost depends on the size of the space, the scope of work, and the materials and finishes you choose. We’ll provide a detailed, fixed quote after your initial consultation so you know exactly what you’re committing to.

The duration of a bathroom renovation depends on the complexity of the project. A simple update might take between 3-4 weeks, whereas a more complex renovation may take up to 6 weeks. We’ll give you a more precise timeline during your consultation, and you’ll be able to track progress daily through BuilderTrend.

Whilst it can get a little tricky when you only have one bathroom, many clients manage to live in their home whilst undertaking a bathroom renovation. Some other ways you can manage this time is by leaning on neighbours, family members and friends. Maximising your gym membership or office shower is also a great idea!

Yes, and often more so than for a newer home. Bathrooms in older homes frequently have outdated layouts, worn fixtures, and waterproofing that is well past its effective life. A properly completed renovation addresses all of this, improves daily comfort and safety, and protects the value of a home you’ve invested in for years.

Many of our clients in this position also take the opportunity to futureproof the space with wider doorways, step-free shower entry, better lighting, and slip-resistant flooring. All of these are far easier and more cost-effective to install during a renovation than to retrofit later.

All tradespeople working on your project are either direct Built By Wood employees or established subcontractors we work with consistently and trust completely. We don’t use labour-hire platforms or unfamiliar contractors.

Troy, your dedicated on-site supervisor,  is on-site regularly and maintains direct oversight of all work being carried out. If you have a concern about anyone on site at any time, you can raise it with Troy or Brian directly.

It’s one of the most common concerns we hear. We plan the construction schedule carefully to minimise the period where the bathroom is fully out of use, and we’ll talk through your specific situation during the consultation so you can plan accordingly. Add something in here about organising a portable toilet being on site.

Some clients arrange to stay with family for a short period. Others make use of a gym or workplace facility. We’ll give you an honest timeline so you can make the right call for your household.

Built By Wood operates across inner Melbourne, with a particular focus on residential suburbs including Coburg, Reservoir, Preston, Northcote, Thornbury, Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Balwyn, Canterbury, Glen Iris, Malvern, Toorak, South Yarra, Armadale, Brighton, Elwood, and the surrounding areas.

If you’re unsure whether your suburb falls within our area, get in touch and we’ll confirm quickly.

That’s exactly what the initial consultation is for. You don’t need to arrive with a mood board or a list of fixtures. You just need a rough sense of what isn’t working about your current bathroom and what you’d like to feel when you walk into the new one.

We’ll guide you through the rest: layout options, practical considerations, finish selections, and a realistic picture of what’s achievable within your budget. There’s no obligation at that stage, and no cost for the initial conversation.

Things Worth Knowing Before You Start

Why the design-and-build model matters more than most people realise

Most renovation problems don’t start on site. They start weeks earlier, when a designer hands over a plan to a builder who wasn’t part of the conversation. Suddenly, there are conflicts between what was drawn and what’s physically possible, and the homeowner is stuck in the middle trying to get two separate businesses to agree.

At Built By Wood, your designer and builder are the same team from day one. That means every decision made at the design table accounts for what’s actually achievable on site, within your home, and within your budget. There’s no gap for things to fall through, and there’s always one person accountable for the whole project.

For homeowners who’ve lived in their home for decades and want this done properly, that continuity matters.

Your home has been looked after for a long time. We treat it accordingly.

Our team protects floors, keeps dust contained, and tidies up at the end of each working day. We’re mindful that you’re living around the work, not the other way around, and we make sure the disruption is as manageable as possible throughout.

You’ll also have daily updates that keep you informed of what happened on site each day, what’s coming next, and who to call if you have a question. You’ll never have to chase us for an update.

Good renovation companies book out in advance. If you’re planning a renovation in the next six to twelve months, starting the conversation now means you won’t be scrambling later, and you’ll have time to make selections without feeling rushed.

The design and planning phase also takes longer than most people expect. Getting the layout right, finalising finishes, and making sure everything is coordinated before construction starts is what prevents problems once the work begins.

An early consultation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It just means you go in informed.
